Allopregnanolone and experimental Alzheimer's disease

Author : Pierre Allain Date : 2010-4-2

Allopregnanolone, a metabolite of progesterone, is a neurosteroid modulatiing  the  GABAergic system and is classified among epalons.

In an article in PNAS, American authors indicate that administration by subcutaneous route of allopregnanolone to transgenic mice with an equivalent of Alzeihmer's disease reduced the deficit in learning and memorization.

The authors suggest that allopregnanolone might have an interest for slowing the progression of Alzeihmer's disease.
