Chlorhexidine-alcohol or povidone-iodine (Bétadine*), like disinfectant in surgery

American authors in a paper published in the NEJM of January 7th, 2010 compared the efficacy of chlorhexidine-alcohol and povidone-iodine for surgical-site antisepsis.

For the preoperative disinfection of the skin, chlorhexidine-alcohol was more effective than povidone-iodine to reduce the frequency of the infections around the domain of intervention of the surgeon, the frequency was reduced by half. Adverse effects were approximately the same with both of them
