Stevia rebaudiana is a small shrub, originating from South America, whose leaves are used traditionally for their benefits on health.
The powder resulting from the leaves of Stevia has been used as sweetener for many years in different countries, its use as sweetener was approved in the USA in 2008 and in France in September 2009.
The leaves of Stevia contain, inter alia, a stevioside which has a powerful sweetening effect. This stevioside is not well absorbed from the digestive tract where it is partially metabolized to steviol which is better absorbed.
In addition to their sweetening effect, various pharmacological effects have been allotted to extracts of Stevia but it is difficult to have an idea about their therapeutic interest.
