Antithyroid drugs
There are not yet antagonists of thyroid hormones, but there are drugs inhibiting thyroid hormone biosynthesis, either by inhibiting iodine uptake by the thyroid, or by inhibiting hormonal synthesis.
Inhibitors of iodide uptake
Monovalent anions like thiocyanate, SNC, and perchlorate, ClO4-, enter in competition with iodide and inhibit its uptake by the thyroid gland. These anions are not used in therapeutics, except to prevent poisoning by iodine, but were used for exploration of thyroid function.
Potassium iodide (stable) itself is used to prevent accumulation of radioactive iodine in the thyroid gland when a risk of contamination exists.
