Steps in drug discovery and development

A drug is a preparation, or more precisely at the present time a well defined molecule, called active principle, intended to treat or prevent a disease. Is also a drug a compound used for a diagnostic purpose, radiological investigations for example.

The goal of pharmacology is to select drugs which combine the best efficacy with the least frequent and the least severe adverse effects and to determine their general conditions of use.
