Serotonin - Chronological milestones
The role of serotonin as transmitter is known since 1950. The antidepressant effect of iproniazid and its MAOI effect were recognized during its use as antituberculous drug in the early 1950s. The first non MAOI drug known as antidepressant was imipramine: Its antidepressant effect was discovered by Kuhn in 1956 during a clinical trial not designed for finding an antidepressant. After this discovery, specific properties of imipramine in animal tests were recognized and used for screening of other new antidepressants.
