Estrogens
The three estrogens are estradiol, estriol and estrone, but estradiol is the most potent. They are secreted primarily by the ovaries under the effect of LH. They have an estrane structure with an aromatic cycle but this estrane structure is not absolutely necessary for estrogenic activity since various compounds containing only one phenolic nucleus, flavone derivatives, pesticides (DDT or dichloro-diphenyl-trichloroethane) for example, have an estrogenic activity, often after their biotransformations.
