Bone and hormones
The main hormones which control the metabolism of calcium and bone are calcitonin, parathyroid hormone and vitamin D. Other hormones are also involved, sexual hormones like estradiol, and cytokines such as RANK-L, IL-1 and IL-6 which increase bone resorption, and osteoprotegerin which decreases it.
The metabolism of calcium and phosphate is treated in another part of this work ( See “Calcium, inhibiters calcic, strontium”. ).
