Androgens
The physiological male hormone, testosterone, is synthesized and secreted by the interstitial cells of the testes called Leydig cells, and in low quantity by the ovary and the adrenal cortex.
Secretion by the testes is under hypothalamic-pituitary control: gonadorelin, called GnRH, gonadotropin-releasing hormone, of hypothalamic origin, stimulates the pituitary secretion of LH, luteinizing hormone, which stimulates testosterone synthesis by the testes.
A deficiency of testosterone secretion results from either a hypothalamic-pituitary defect, or a testicular anomaly.
